The West Highland Way Race, on Scotland’s iconic long-distance hiking route, is one of the world’s longest-established ultra-marathons. The race first took place in 1985, between Milngavie, just north of Glasgow, and Fort William in the Scottish Highlands.
It takes in the full length of one of Scotland’s iconic loch’s, “Loch Lomond” and travels through famous glens with historic villages like Crianlarich and Tyndrum. The race crosses over remote Rannoch Moor to arrive at Glencoe before the climb up the ancient path over the Devil’s Staircase opens up breathtaking views of Glencoe and the Mamores. You then drop down to sea level at Kinlochleven before climbing back up for the final breathtaking miles through the remote Lharig Mor brings you to Glen Nevis, at the foot of Britain’s Highest mountain, Ben Nevis and the journeys goal of Fort William.
Since 1985, it has developed a worldwide reputation as one of the classic ultra-marathon races, attracting runners to Scotland from all over the world. Entry is limited to 300 runners each year, with the relatively small size of the field helping to preserve the friendly nature of the event.
The 2025 race will be held on Saturday, 21st June. Do browse the race website for full entry, route details and much more at,
