Most ultra runners know Renee McGregor as one of the sport’s leading voices on nutrition, Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) and eating disorder recovery. Through her work with elite athletes and everyday runners alike, she has spent decades helping others perform better while building healthier relationships with food.
But behind the professional reputation is a story that few people have heard.
That story is told in Unfiltered, an intimate new documentary that follows McGregor as she prepares for the Lakeland 50 while reflecting on the childhood trauma, racism and personal challenges that have shaped both her life and her determination to help others.
Following a successful festival run, the award-winning 43-minute film is now available worldwide through Summit Fever Media’s video-on-demand platform.
Directed by Ellie Green and produced by Matt Green, Unfiltered offers unprecedented access to McGregor’s world, following not only her race preparation but also the realities of balancing family life, a demanding professional career and her ongoing advocacy within endurance sport.
Alongside friends, family and clients, the documentary explores themes that extend well beyond running, including resilience, identity, belonging and recovery.
“I’m so often ‘Renee McGregor the professional’. There’s so much about me that people don’t know, and I think this film will help people understand how I became the person I am and why I want to help so many people,” said McGregor.
Unfiltered premiered to a standing ovation at Kendal Mountain Festival before going on to screen at Fort William Mountain Festival, London Mountain Film Festival, Mountains and City International Film Festival and the Rhodope International Documentary Film Festival.
The film has also received industry recognition, winning the Open category at Pro Moviemaker magazine’s 2025 Filmmaker of the Year Awards. Director Ellie Green was subsequently named the publication’s Overall Filmmaker of the Year 2026.
Green said:
“Renee trusted me with an incredibly personal story. I wanted to make a film that went beyond sporting performance and explored the experiences that shaped her, the battles she has fought, and the hope she offers to others. After the response Unfiltered received at festivals, it means a great deal to make the film available worldwide and give more people the chance to see it.”
Supported by Montane and Clougha, Unfiltered is ultimately less about running a 50-mile race than it is about understanding the experiences that shape us and the strength it takes to transform adversity into purpose.
For anyone who has followed McGregor’s work—or simply enjoys thoughtful storytelling from within the trail and ultra-running community—it promises to be a compelling watch.
