Tor Des Geants 2016: 336km in 74 hours

By Elsa Trujillo

Another great edition of the Tor des Geants in Italy has concluded. Taking place just a few weeks after UTMB, Tor des Geants is another epic ultra trail running mountain event in the Alps: a 336km race through the Gran Paradiso Natural Park and the Mont Avic Regional Park with 24,000m of ascent where runners are free to decide where and when to stop for rest and replenishment.

It kicked off last Sunday (11 September) at 10am and will officially finish in Courmayeur on Saturday 17 September, a cut-off of 150 hours, following a route along the Alta Via 1 and Alta Via 2 of the Valle d’Aosta passing some of Europe’s highest and most famous mountains: Gran Paradiso, Monte Rosa, Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.

Italian Oliviero Bosatelli, a fireman, crossed the finish line on Wednesday in half the time allotted: 75 hours and 10 minutes. Two Spaniards took the honours for second and third place, approximately six and eight hours later respectively. Óscar Pérez López came in second at 81 hours, crossing the line at 19:14 and Pablo Criado Toca was third, finishing at 21:40 on Wednesday.

For the women, another Italian, Lisa Borzani from Padua, ran impeccably and came in first at 05:09 on Thursday. She also finished 7th overall. Stephanie Case, from Gaza, and Maria Semerjian, from France, came in second and third also on Thursday.

You can follow the ongoing race here until Saturday.
