Black Diamond Distance Carbon FLZ pole review

If I did it again, I’d take poles,” were Gavin Barrett’s words as he finished the Everest Trail Race, a 6 day stage ultra in the Himalaya. I certainly wouldn’t have liked to attempt it without them. In a mountain ultra, poles can help with everything from speed to stability.

Black Diamond make a variety of weights and strengths and are a popular choice with runners.

I had been using very light weight poles from a different brand made from titanium which had bent in tough mountain terrain so I was keen to try out a slightly heavier and sturdier sticks.

This is what I found.

Conclusion

The Black Diamond Distance Carbon FLZ poles are excellent for harsh, mountain terrain.

You can adjust them initially to your height and then just flick the little button in and out to collapse them. You have the option to keep adjusting for ascents and descents but I didn’t feel the need to use this.

They are not the lightest, but I was very happy with their robustness and had no anxiety that they were going to snap and bend as I was hammering my full weight on them downhill.
