Introduction
If you’re anything like me, I love packs with stacks of storage for both racing and weekend adventures. They save carrying heavier walking bags and allow plenty of space for just about everything you need, minus a tent. For me, the true test is all about well-thought-out pockets – not ones designed like Fort Knox, wasting time trying to find where you just about managed to squeeze something in. Instead, simple, plentiful homes for snacks to keep you going. The Camelbak Apex Pro 12L was designed to carry all the essentials you need for race days, while remaining durable and comfortable, but does it deliver on its promise?
Key Features
- Plentiful space for kit and multiple pockets
- Removable trekking pole quiver
- RECCO technology for safety
- £175 from Camelbak
Size
The Camelbak Apex Pro 12L is Unisex and comes as XS, S, M or L. I went for an XS (58-81cm chest) which is my usual size in alternative race vests, and it seemed true to size, even in Unisex sizing. Capacity-wise, 12 litres is more than enough for even huge days and events, and could even be a multi-day solution if you pack smart. There is an option to fit one of Camelbak’s hydration bladders (up to 2 litres) but you would need to buy this separately.
Design
The Camelbak Apex Pro 12L looks smart, and it’s compact, designed efficiently for storage, and made of very comfortable material. As soon I picked the pack up, I was impressed with the overall design and look of the product and was excited to try it out. Let’s start with the pole quiver. For me, these are so handy for longer, steeper days up the mountains and my wish list has always included a removable bag for the poles. The evolution of the pole quiver is one I’m fully on board with, and the neatly placed pocket right at the bottom of the pack makes it easy to store away, even in a rush, or for shorter days, leave it at home. The design of this is so slick and I think this is a massive selling point.
Next, the RECCO technology. This is relatively new technology in the world of running packs and the aim is to enable rescue professionals to locate you in the unfortunate event you’re in trouble, not something every pack on the market offers.
The RECCO reflector makes you searchable to the rescuers. RECCO reflectors are lightweight passive transponders that require no power or activation to function. They consist of a diode and an antenna. RECCO reflectors are designed to last a lifetime and do not age or wear out. If not mechanically damaged they will last forever.
It works by detecting signals and this type of technology is used by mountain rescue teams in numerous countries. Though this might not be on everyone’s wish list just yet, it’s a comforting feature for safety in which I hope becomes a popular add-on to future packs.
Next, the space. The Camelbak Apex Pro 12L is the most luxuriously spaced pack I’ve tried, and I’ve tried a lot over my years running. The main compartment feels enormous and upon testing, I fitted a down jacket, gloves, waterproof, windproof, headtorch, and even some lunch with no problem, and there is still a bit of wiggle room (No, I’m not carrying your sandwiches too!) There’s a stretch overflow compartment inside too for any smaller items you need easy access to and I personally love the side zip design for something that little bit different.
There’s so many pockets! A huge plus of this pack is its layered pocket system on each of the shoulder straps and also under the arms for ease. The pockets at the front of the bag fit my (pretty large) phone comfortably, which makes me a very happy customer as I find a lot of pack designs a challenge when I want to get my phone out to start a new podcast. There’s even a small pocket at either side under the flasks which is great for items like lightweight gloves or energy gels. When things couldn’t get any better, I even found a tiny easy-to-reach zip compartment at the top of the bag for keys.
Lastly, there is a reflector included on the bag for the foggiest of days, which is always going to be a winner in unpredictable landscapes.
Performance
My first impression of the Camelbak Apex Pro 12L is an excellent one. Tight fitting packs need to feel comfortable, and this one feels like a big hug that you don’t want to pull away from in a rush which is great for the miles. The nylon material felt nice on my skin, and so far, I haven’t had any chafing which can be a very irritating feature in other packs.
While the dual adjustable chest straps are made well, they can get loose quite quickly which is a problem I always have and sadly this pack is no different. I was constantly tightening them when I was running uphill, which was surprising as the pack didn’t move around too much.
If I had to nitpick, I’d say the pack is slightly heavier compared to others but that doesn’t pose any issues for me. I prefer a bag to be compact and comfortable over totally minimal – it’s an honest bag and you get what you see, with a few surprises thrown in there for good measure.
The Camelbak Apex Pro 12L is versatile – its brilliant for seasonal running, both on and off road, and even greater up the mountains, on races, and for proper expeditions. It’s up for an adventure, and it’s certainly going to be welcomed as my companion.
Sustainability
With it’s nylon material, the pack is pretty hardy, meaning rougher trails and ridges are welcome territory where durability is a must.
The waster-resistant PU-coated zippered pocket prevents anything from getting wet which is a major plus. It seems hard-wearing, even in the harshest of conditions, and I’m looking forward to putting this to the test in Winter. There’s certainly a pocket available for extra gloves and a buff! On looking at Camelbak’s sustainability credentials, it’s not clear which goals the pack trumps, but one thing for sure is the bag is at least durable enough to last several seasons preventing buying a new one on an annual basis.
Value
There’s no beating around the bush, there’s a hefty price tag at £175, but rightly so with RECCO technology and bags of storage space. For me, its worth the money, as it offers so much more than your average pack. The pockets alone are worth paying that little bit extra for, so for me, it’s design certain offers enough to justify the cost.
Overall Rating
This is clearly designed by athletes for athletes. It’s as if they’ve written a wish list and Camelbak has delivered, and then some. The Camelbak Apex Pro 12L delivers an optimized feel and has just become my new go-to bag. Well played Camelbak!
