Scarpa Ribelle Run LT Review

Built for the Rough Stuff

You can tell it’s been designed with the mountains in mind when you first pick up the Scarpa Ribelle Run LT. They have that unmistakable Scarpa sturdiness; solid, dependable, and clearly built to handle rough, unpredictable terrain. It’s part of the Ribelle family but sits a little lower in the range than the Ribelle Run 2, which is more performance-focused. The LT aims to bridge the gap between technical mountain shoe and everyday trail companion.

It’s definitely not a featherweight shoe. The Ribelle Run LT feels heavier and stiffer than most trail shoes, and you really notice that on the smoother, easier ground around me in Leeds. But as soon as I step onto the technical terrain of the Lake or Peak District, which includes rocky ascents, scree slopes, grassy descents, limestone rocks and loose gravel, the whole shoe comes into its own. That stiffness suddenly becomes stability, and the extra weight gives you a sense of security and control that lighter shoes can’t match.

Sole

The Ribelle Run LT uses Scarpa’s PRESA® TRN-09 sole, designed to cope with just about anything you’ll find on the trail. The tread has a slightly wider, multi-directional pattern that grips well on mixed ground and feels stable when the surface changes underfoot. It’s not an aggressive fell-style sole, but it offers plenty of traction control whether you’re climbing, descending, or moving over uneven terrain.

Upper

The upper uses Scarpa’s Sock-Fit LW construction, which wraps the foot snugly in a lightweight, seamless design. The materials feel durable yet comfortable, with heat-sealed reinforcements adding protection without making the shoe feel bulky. The fit is secure but forgiving, with good flexibility around the ankle, tongue and forefoot so your feet can move naturally. It’s a well-balanced design that gives a precise feel on technical ground while still being comfortable enough for long days out.

Performance

Scarpa shoes excel when things get rough, and this one is no exception. The grip feels reliable on wet rock and mixed ground, and there’s enough torsional stiffness to keep your footing secure when you’re hopping from stone to stone or side-stepping a loose edge. The LT is happiest when the trail demands concentration and gives you a wrap-around, secure fit that gives you the confidence to explore demanding trails.

For me, the Ribelle Run LT is the kind of shoe you wear on days when you’re guiding, exploring or moving steadily through mixed mountain terrain rather than racing. It’s not about speed, it’s about confidence. I felt the shoe supporting me when I was on broken paths and uneven surfaces, and it’s that sense of security that makes it stand out.

Personally, I find the Ribelle Run LT heavier and stiffer than what I’d normally choose for general trail running. It feels heavy and stiff on the easy terrain I run on around Leeds, but on technical ground it’s a different story. It feels planted, stable, and ready for anything. It’s a shoe for serious mountain terrain rather than casual miles.

When you compare it with the Ribelle Run 2, which Megan James reviewed for RunUltra here, the differences become clear. The Ribelle Run 2 is lighter, more agile and feels more tuned for fast, technical mountain running. It’s sharper underfoot, with deeper lugs (6 mm versus the LT’s 4mm) and has better breathability through the 3D bio-based print on the upper. The fit of the Run 2 was one of Scarpa’s best improvements, more precise, with good heel hold and just enough toe room, and it feels nimbler overall.

The LT sits just below that in the line-up: less of a race shoe, more of a rugged, all-day mountain trainer. It shares the same DNA, offering stability and protectiveness but it’s aimed at runners who want a touch more durability and comfort over long hours rather than outright speed. As such, it has been designed with beginners to intermediate runners in mind, who look for maximum reliability on runs across mixed terrain.

In terms of grip, the difference is subtle but noticeable. The Ribelle Run 2 has a slightly more aggressive outsole that bites better into soft ground, while the LT should be more balanced and predictable on rock and compact trails. On slippery grass or thick mud, neither will rival a pure fell shoe, but both are impressively versatile across wet, rocky, and uneven ground.

Both models are built to last, something Scarpa continues to do better than most. The quality of the upper materials, stitching and rand is excellent, and these shoes can take a beating without passing that on to your foot. You pay a little weight penalty for that durability, but for me, it’s worth it. When I’m out for long days guiding or exploring in unpredictable weather, I’d rather have a shoe that feels solid and supportive than one that might give up after a season.

Pros

  • Exceptionally stable and protective on technical terrain
  • Durable construction with outstanding build quality
  • Secure, wrap-around fit that inspires confidence
  • Excellent grip on rock and mixed surfaces

Cons

  • Heavier and stiffer than most trail shoes
  • Less breathable and flexible than lighter trail models

Verdict

So where does that leave the Ribelle Run LT? If your running is mostly on smoother trails, or you prioritise lightweight comfort and flexibility, you’ll probably find it too stiff. But if you are starting out on the mountains and want to spend more time on rocky, technical ground, or you want a shoe that can cross over between trail and mountain running, the LT is a great choice.

It’s a shoe that asks a bit more of you; it needs proper terrain to show what it can do but once you find that, it’s incredible. The Scarpa Ribelle Run LT isn’t about being the lightest or fastest; it’s about being sure-footed, tough, and ready for whatever the mountain throws at you.

Summary

The Scarpa Ribelle Run LT is a mountain shoe through and through. It might not win any prizes for lightness or bounce, but when you’re on steep, technical ground, it’s brilliant. If your adventures take you beyond the comfort of manicured trails and into real mountain terrain, the LT is a solid, dependable partner.
