Swiss Canyon Trail to Leave World Trail Majors

The Swiss Canyon Trail has announced that it will withdraw from the World Trail Majors (WTM) series at the end of 2025.

Based in Couvet, Switzerland, the Swiss Canyon Trail has been a founding member of the World Trail Majors since the series was launched in September 2022. However, organisers say that an extensive review of the collaboration has led them to conclude that the partnership no longer aligns with the race’s values or long-term vision.

Governance and transparency concerns

In a statement released this week, Swiss Canyon Trail organisers highlighted concerns around the governance and strategic management of the World Trail Majors. They cited a lack of formal structure, budgetary clarity, regular financial audits and clearly defined collective decision-making processes, more than three years after the circuit’s creation.

According to the organisers, repeated requests for clarification on governance and key decisions did not result in the level of transparency they believe is essential for an international collaboration of this scale. As a result, they felt unable to maintain the trust required for a long-term partnership.

Transparency, open dialogue and mutual respect were described as non-negotiable principles for the Swiss Canyon Trail, which has been staged for more than three decades.

Increased prize money from 2026

From 2026 onwards, the Swiss Canyon Trail will no longer award points towards the World Trail Majors rankings. Instead, the event has announced a substantial increase in prize money for elite athletes.

True to its long-standing commitment to equality, prize money will continue to be awarded with full parity between men and women. For the 2026 edition, winners will receive:

  • €5,000 for the 111km
  • €2,000 for the 81km
  • €1,000 for the 51km

Full prize money details are available via the event’s official website.

Organisers say the move reflects their continued focus on recognising and fairly rewarding elite athletes, a principle that has been central to the race since its inception.

Independence and future direction

By stepping away from the World Trail Majors, the Swiss Canyon Trail says it will regain full autonomy over its strategic development. The organisers plan to continue investing in innovation, enhancing the experience for both elite and amateur runners, strengthening the event’s regional impact and pursuing international growth on their own terms.

They also confirmed that new concepts and collaborations are currently in development, aimed at preserving the core values of trail running while delivering a high-quality and inspiring event.

Looking ahead to 2026

The 31st edition of the Swiss Canyon Trail will take place from 29–31 May 2026, offering five distances: 16km, 31km, 51km, 81km and the flagship 111km race.

Organisers report strong early demand, with registrations currently up 20% across all distances compared to the same period in 2024. Several elite European athletes have already confirmed their participation.

Set in the Canton of Neuchâtel, the Swiss Canyon Trail continues to attract runners with its demanding courses, dramatic landscapes and reputation for high-quality organisation. The 2026 edition is expected to deliver another standout sporting and community experience for athletes and spectators alike.
