VOOM Nutrition’s Electro Bytes got plenty of use during a hot summer of testing. These fizzy, citrusy electrolyte chews let me take my minerals separately from my drinks, and I loved both flavours.
Electrolytes are easy to overlook on a long outing, particularly when flavour fatigue sets in and all you fancy is plain, fresh water. A chewable option makes that choice straightforward: drink your water and nibble your electrolytes alongside it.

On Test
Both flavours have a lovely fizzy, citrusy taste. Seville Orange just edges it for me, but I was happy using either. The hot weather gave me plenty of reason to reach for them regularly.
One particularly memorable outing was a 5 Peaks Challenge in the Lake District. I was leading a group of inexperienced hikers who had never visited the Lakes before, taking them from Langdale up to Scafell on a scorching, cloudless day.
The group did really well until I noticed one client looking very pale and struggling at the back. He told me he felt awful and sat on a rock at the top of the climb from the col below Broad Crag.
He had been drinking plenty of water but had brought no electrolytes, so I gave him a couple of Electro Bytes. After a couple of minutes’ rest, his colour and energy returned. The improvement was striking, though it came alongside that short rest and the water he had already been drinking.
That day brought the convenience of the format into focus. When someone has water but no electrolyte drink, there is nothing to mix: the chews can be taken separately. VOOM’s suggested two-chew serving also makes it straightforward to see how much you are taking.
Long runs can leave us thoroughly fed up with the taste of electrolyte drinks. Sometimes plain water is exactly what appeals, and these offer another way to include electrolytes without flavouring every bottle. For me, their enjoyable taste is a big part of the attraction. I want to reach for them!
Pros
- Taste: Fizzy and citrusy, with both flavours enjoyable.
- Choice: Seville Orange is my favourite, but Lemon and Lime is a close second.
- Plain-water option: A convenient way to take electrolytes separately when drink flavour fatigue kicks in.
Cons
Electro Bytes make only a small contribution to running fuel: two chews provide 3g of carbohydrate. Longer outings still need a separate fuelling plan, even if these are your chosen electrolyte supplement.
Packet Size
Voom Nutrition have responded to feedback and made the packets smaller and rounded the corners off. I can’t say I particularly noticed the packet being large or spiky, but reducing packaging in general is always good. The top does rip off easily, which is a handy consideration when hot and tired, with sweaty hands.
Conclusion
Five stars from me. I loved both flavours and used Electro Bytes regularly through the hot weather. They are a handy choice when I want plain water and a separate electrolyte top-up. Given the choice of the two flavours, I’d reach for Seville Orange.
